The Domestic Violence Ministry of Hill Street Baptist Church was created to address the need for educational experiences provided by faith based congregations.
Sheltering in place during the Pandemic
Due to Covid-19, Government Leaders have ordered us to stay at home, except for activities that are essential. Home is supposed to be a safe haven. What does that mean for victims of Domestic Violence?
Stay at home orders can have life-threatening consequences for many people, women, and children in particular.
Though 85 percent of domestic violence victims are women, men are also victims.
With families in lockdown, violence is more frequent.
Victims are forced to be in constant contact with the very person who abuses them.
Unfortunately, the pandemic restrictions have created opportunities for abusers to find new tactics to control their partners.
They may prevent their partners from seeking medical attention or they may withhold face masks, hand sanitizers, disinfectants, or soaps.
Helpmate is the Domestic Violence Advocacy and Crisis Response Organization for Buncombe County.
Helpmates Hotline remains available 24 hours per day for those in need of assistance with Domestic Violence issues.
Their telephone number is 828-254-0516.
Children unable to go to school or community activities have no safe refuge from an abusive situation at home. The children are probably experiencing and witnessing more abuse than in the past.
Churches can ease the stress of families in crisis in some small way by making activities available for children by way of activity books, board games, crafts, bubbles, puzzles, clay, blocks, coloring books and crayons.
Church Family, if you would like to give toward the purchase of these items or know anyone in need, please contact the church office as soon as possible.
